# Data analyst resume example (2026) with keywords

Updated 18 October 2026

**Short answer:** A data analyst resume should prove three things fast: you can query and clean data (SQL, Python or R, Excel), you can show it clearly (Tableau, Power BI), and your analysis changed a decision. Name the tools exactly as the job post does, and give every bullet a business result, not just a dashboard.

## What recruiters scan for in a data analyst resume

- The core tools by name. SQL first, then Excel, a BI tool (Tableau, Power BI, Looker) and often Python or R. If the post asks for SQL and your resume never says it, many screeners stop there.
- Business context. Which decisions your analysis fed: pricing, inventory, churn, marketing spend. Domain words from the post, such as supply chain or claims, help too.
- Outcomes, not artifacts. A dashboard is an output; hours saved, costs cut or a decision changed is the outcome.
- Communication. Analysts are hired to explain. Presenting findings, writing summaries and working with non-technical teams all count.

## How to write the skills section

- Put SQL first, then the BI tool and language the post names. Order signals strength.
- Name specific features when the post does: window functions, Power Query, DAX, pandas. They match search terms in technical posts.
- Add statistical methods (regression, A/B testing, forecasting) only if a bullet backs them up.

## Common data analyst resume mistakes

- Listing every tool from a course syllabus. Keep the ones you have used on real data.
- Bullets that end at the artifact: built a dashboard, wrote a query. Add who used it and what changed.
- Leaving out data size and source. Rows, tables, systems or number of stores make the work concrete.
- Hiding portfolio projects. For entry-level analysts, a projects section linking to Tableau Public or GitHub often carries the resume.

## Frequently asked questions

### What should a data analyst put on a resume with no experience?

Lead with a projects section: two or three analyses of real public datasets, each naming the tools (SQL, Excel, Tableau) and the question you answered. Add relevant coursework or a certificate, and any job where you worked with numbers, even in retail or operations.

### Is Python required for a data analyst resume?

Not always. Many analyst roles need SQL, Excel and a BI tool, with Python or R listed as preferred. Check the post: if Python is a requirement, show it in a bullet; if it is a nice-to-have, list it only if you can use it.

### Which certifications help a data analyst resume?

The Google Data Analytics certificate and Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst (PL-300) are common at entry level, and Tableau certifications help for Tableau-heavy roles. They support a resume but do not replace evidence of real analysis.
